Amparo Navarro
Soprano

Valencian soprano Amparo Navarro recently made her American debut at Florida Grand Opera, singing the title role of Luisa Fernanda conducted by Placido Domingo.

After completing a degree at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia, and continuing her studies in Madrid with Isabel Penagos, she made her professional debut at the Wiener Kammeroper in the zarzuela El barberillo de Lavapies (Barbieri) and immediately thereafter appeared as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte at the IVM, conducted by Joan Cervero.

In ensuing seasons, she exploded onto the international scene, appearing as Desdemona in Otello, Micaela in Carmen and the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Zaragoza, as Hanna in Die lustige Witwe with the OCT, and in her debut with the Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires as the soprano soloist in Verdi’s Requiem and as Giselda in I Lombardi, conducted by Richard Bonynge. She returned to Madrid as Adalgisa alongside the Norma of Susan Neves, then debuted in the Teatro de la Zarzuela as Paloma in Calixto Bieito’s production of El barbarillo de Lavapies. At the Palau de la Música de Valencia, she was seen in Rodrigo’s El hijo fingido, then she went north to Oviedo for La del soto del parral in the Teatro Campoamor and Rossini’s Stabat Mater in the Auditorio Principe Felipe, conducted by Alberto Zedda. In the new Auditorio de El Escorial, she appeared in La verbena de la Paloma, which was released as a dvd on the Decca label.

Ms. Navarro’s appearances worldwide include: Puccini’s Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) and Anna (Le villi) in Mallorca; La festa del Villaggio by Martin i Soler in the Palau in Valencia; Luisa Fernanda in Caracas, in a co-production of Washington Opera and the Teatro Real directed by Emilio Sagi; a debut at the Palau de les Arts alongside Placido Domingo in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride; Lucrezia Contarini in I due Foscari at the Teatro Colón; return visits to the Teatro de la Zarzuela as Maravillas in La Calesera, Amapola in La leyenda del beso and Luisa Fernanda; as the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana with La Fura del Baus in Lyon, France, at the Quincena Musical de San Sebastian and in the Palau de la Música Catalana; Mimì in La Bohème at the Festival Internacional de Ópera de Torremolinos.

Her oratorio repertoire includes Vivaldi’s Gloria, the Magnificats of J.S. Bach and Pergolesi, Mozart’s and Verdi’s Requiems, Haydn’s Missa Brevis and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

“The role of Adalgisa was taken by the young Valencian singer Amparo Navarro. She was the great surprise, the revelation of the evening. A student of Isabel Penagos who cut her teeth in zarzuela and first appeared in opera three years ago as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte in Valencia, she performed with ease, security, subtlety and good taste. Her duets with Susan Neves, especially in the second act, were extraordinary.”
El Pais
“The Spanish soprano Amparo Navarro Serra more than fulfilled the exhausting requirements of Giselda, especially considering the difficulty of the pieces Verdi reserved for her. She employed her notable vocal agility, her phrasing and her spectacular mastery of high notes. Her “Ave Maria” at the beginning of the second act was touching, and her duet with Oronte extremely expressive.”
La Nacion
“The leading role was entrusted to soprano Amparo Navarro, who sang it with personality, technique and style, and gave excellent examples of interpretive quality in her dialogue, which is so important in zarzuela.”
