Barbee Monk
Soprano

Soprano Barbee Monk is known for her “vivacious flair” and “plush, vibrant soprano.” Of her recent performance in Bronx Opera’s updated production of The Mikado, Robert Levine of Classics Today wrote, “The finest singing of the afternoon came from Barbee Monk as Yum-Yum, with a superbly tuned, full-lyric soprano and flawless diction.”

A frequent performer of Mozart’s heroines, she has sung the roles of Fiordiligi (New York Opera Conservatory), Donna Anna (Geneva Light Opera), Konstanze (Bronx Opera), and Pamina (Opera Theatre of Montclair). Her other operatic repertoire includes Rosalinde with New York Lyric Opera Theatre, Galatea with Opera Theatre of Montclair, and the leading role of the Bride/Wife/Mother in The Vanishing Bridegroom with Barnard Opera.

Ms. Monk enjoys performing on the concert stage, and her orchestral repertoire includes the Requiems of Fauré, Mozart, and Brahms as well as Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s ElijahOrff’s Carmina Burana, and Bach’s St. John Passion. She has appeared with Miami’s Alhambra Orchestra, the New Jersey Music Society, and church music and arts series including those of St. John’s in the Village (New York City) and St. Patrick Church (Miami).

Ms. Monk was a 2019 Eastern Region Finalist of the NATS Artist Awards. She has also been recognized with awards from the Gerda Lissner Foundation, New York Lyric Opera Theatre, and Georgina Dieter Dennis Foundation. She holds degrees from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and the University of North Florida. She has also studied at the European Music Academy in Prague and the Frost School of Music at Salzburg.

As Yum-Yum in The Mikado with Bronx Opera Company
“Barbee Monk as Yum-Yum and Jonathan Price as Nanki-Poo were naturals, with the requisite glibness and bounce to make their characters spring to life. Their tongue-in-cheek approach to the high drama of this delicious comedy lifted the entire performance. Monk slathered her dialogue with a rich Southern drawl and lavished her plush, vibrant soprano on Sullivan’s lilting melodies.”

“As Yum-Yum, soprano Barbee Monk brought a vain and vivacious flair that often drew one’s attention and lent more agency to the character.”

“Barbee Monk sang Strauss’ ‘Zueignung’ with a soaring soprano well suited to the music’s almost Wagnerian flow. The finale is triumphant with expectation and hope. Ms. Monk was a herald of song.”
