Filipino-American soprano Hanna Socorro is a dynamic stage actress with a voice that displays dramatic expression. She is recognized on stage as having a dark and honeyed vocal quality that can easily convey both strength and tenderness.
Hanna was born in San Francisco where she began her ascent in the vocal arts by pursuing musical theatre. At the age of 17, she attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Manhattan where she received her degrees in Fine Arts & Dance. However, destiny would have that she return to her more classical interests and so she devoted her time thereafter to study the operatic voice. During her nine years of private training, Hanna has contributed her voice to new media projects, including video articles featured in Paper Magazine where she sang excerpts from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. She has taken part in productions of Puccini’s La bohème with Amore Opera and Verdi’s Macbeth with Teatro Mistral. She has sung the roles of Nedda in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Oberto in Handel’s Alcina, the title role of Handel’s Semele, and Liu in Puccini’s final opera Turandot with NYC based companies and workshops. She has appeared in concerts throughout Italy and has sung with acclaimed Italian tenor and coach, Andrea Elena.
She will make her principal debut as La Voce with Phenix Opera’s production of Resipighi’s Lucrezia and her mainstage debut with Opera Cultura as the title role of Rodriguez’s Frida, an opera chronicling the life of historical artist Frida Kahlo. When she’s not singing, she and her husband are maintaining their Italian restaurant in the booming neighborhood of Park Slope, Brooklyn. Hanna’s greatest joy comes from discovering the historical honesty to the stories, myths, and legends in opera and surrendering to its truth through voice.
