Jennifer Kosharsky
Mezzo-Soprano

Praised by the press as “an excellent actress, with a dark-timbered, mezzo-soprano voice” of “outstanding vocal range,” Jennifer Kosharsky is an accomplished mezzo-soprano whose powerful performances have captivated audiences and critics alike. Her portrayal of Princess Eboli in Verdi’s Don Carlo for Houston’s Opera in the Heights inspired acclaim, with reviewers calling her “a powerhouse mezzo…velvet voiced…a supple mezzo [that] raised the roof.” According to The Elgin Review, “her dark, polished tone reminds you of exquisite contralto voices from another continent and centur while her strength and control in the upper register demonstrate her remarkable tessitura.”

Jennifer’s upcoming engagements include performing the role of Amneris in Verdi’s Aida with Prolírica de Antioquia in Colombia and Verdi’s Requiem with Chicago Choral Artists. Most recently, she joined The Joffrey Ballet in Yuri Possokhov’s Anna Karenina by Ilya Demutsky, appearing in productions at both the Lyric Opera of Chicago and The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

In the summer of 2024, she covered two dramatic leading roles—Baba in Menotti’s La Medium (Italian Version) and La Madre in Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero with Opera Festival Chicago. In 2023, highlights include Jennifer’s debut as Santuzza in Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana with the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra and performances of Beethoven’s Mass in C Major with the Chicago Bar Association Symphony Orchestra.

In 2022, Jennifer debuted with Chicago’s Folks Operetta as Wirten in the American premiere of Korngold’s Die Kathrin, part of the Korngold Festival at the University of Chicago. Signature operatic roles in her diverse repertoire include Dalila in Samson et Dalila (St. Petersburg Opera, West Bay Opera), the title role in Carmen (Teatro Lirico D’Europa), Preziosilla in Verdi’s La forza del destino (Da Corneto Opera), and Suzuki in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (Golden Gate Opera, Elgin Opera, Muddy River Opera, Music by the Lake)

Jennifer has also enjoyed a distinguished concert career, with engagements as a soloist in works such as Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody, De Falla’s El Amor Brujo, Verdi’s Requiem, Saint-Saëns’ Le Déluge, and Handel’s Messiah. She has appeared with esteemed orchestras, including Music of the Baroque (Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy) and the Traverse City Symphony Orchestra, and made her European debut with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra in Croatia, performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

A graduate of DePaul University, Jennifer began her musical journey as a professional flutist before transitioning to opera. She has garnered recognition as a finalist and winner in numerous prestigious vocal competitions, including the Classical Singer International Emerging Professional Competition, the Marcella Sembrich Vocal Competition, the MacAllister Awards, and the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation Vocal Competition. She has also competed internationally, reaching the semi-finals in both the Tito Gobbi International Competition and the Gian Battista Viotti International Music Competition in Italy.

"At first, the dark, polished tone of mezzo-soprano Jennifer Kosharsky reminds you of exquisite contralto voices from another continent and century, but her strength and control in the upper register of Verdi's "Oh dischiuso è il firmamento" proves she can cover either part with her impressive tessitura.”
