Michelle Seipel
Soprano

Hailed as “an impressive soprano” of “considerable vocal agility and style” (Baltimore Sun), MICHELLE SEIPEL’s credits include roles such as Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor) with Opera Vivente, Rosina (The Barber of Sevile) with American Landmark Festival, and Musetta (La bohème) with St. Petersburg Opera.

Ms. Seipel made her Lincoln Center debut in the New York Philharmonic’s Emmy-nominated production of Carousel and her New York City Center debut with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players.

Most recently, she played Valencienne in Die lustige Witwe and Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, a role she is slated to reprise in NYC in 2026, and premiered composer Melissa Shiflett’s commissioned work The Memory of Elephants. Other highlights include Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with Geneva Light Opera, Clorinda in La Cenerentola for New York City Opera, and Nellie Forbush in South Pacific with Asheville Lyric Opera. Ms. Seipel starred in an eclectic trio of pieces with Underworld Productions in New York, including Thomas Deneuville’s song cycle for electric guitar and soprano, the role of Procne in Voice for a Future Nightingale, and the Trio Girl in Trouble in Tahiti.

A truly versatile performer recognized for her “winning naturalness” and “remarkable comedic skills,” Ms. Seipel’s crossover career has encompassed roles like Mary Turner (Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing), Carrie Pipperidge (Carousel), the Ghost of Christmas Past (A Christmas Carol), and Anne Egerman (A Little Night Music). On the Columbia Artists Theatricals national tour of Oliver!, she played multiple roles, including Mrs. Bedwin, Mrs. Sowerberry, Widow Corney, and even played flute with the orchestra. Combining her love of travel with her love of singing, Ms. Seipel performed around the world (including Antarctica) on Holland America’s MS Veendam.

Additional credits include The Tender Land with Skylight Opera (recorded for public television), as well as the Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute) and Livietta in an innovative, bilingual production of Pergolesi’s Livietta e Tracollo. Ms. Seipel has been the recipient of numerous awards, including awards from the Wisconsin District Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year Competition.

Originally from Wisconsin, this former actuary earned her Master’s degree in Music at the Peabody Conservatory.

Ms. Seipel lives in New York City.

But of all the performers, Seipel most perfectly captures the mixture of musical virtuosity, outrageous melodrama, and sharp comic timing that makes Gilbert and Sullivan operettas a joy to behold nearly 150 years later.

The absolute star of the show was Michelle Seipel, who brought a delightful sense of mischief to the role of the Witch. Seipel’s bright, clear voice, matched with an endlessly expressive command of the libretto and a dancer’s command of the stage, injected life into a character who was otherwise confusingly written.

It’s always a pleasure to hear Ms. Seipel, who is well known in New York musical theater. Her strong, easily produced soprano, and her remarkable comedic skills (I’ve only seen her in comic roles, but I’m sure she’d be a fine Tosca) are beautifully focused. She begins as Mother, then morphs into the Witch (strange how often that seems to happen in preadolescent fantasies). Ms. Seipel is lovely, and a skilled musical actress, something I am always happy to say about opera singers.

Soprano Michelle Seipel as Susanna...is an ideal match for Figaro. Dramatically and vocally, she consistently impresses and charms across the ever-shifting situations. Together, they light up the stage.

Michelle Seipel's performance...is worth the price of admission alone. A stunningly gifted soprano, Seipel is a consummate triple threat. Every scene she's in, is magical.
