Gillian Hollis



American Soprano Gillian Hollis has been described as “bright voiced...with remarkably clear diction and a strong sense of drama” (Star-Ledger), “simply outstanding” (Encore Michigan), and possessing “great flexibility and poise-filled musicality” (Sequenza21).

Most recently Ms. Hollis has graced the stages of Michigan’s Opera Grand Rapids as Kathie in their production of Romberg’s The Student Prince and Illinois’ Martin Theatre where a season’s worth of touring with Opera for the Young’s production of The Magic Flute by Mozart as the Queen of the Night culminated in her Ravinia Music Festival debut. During the 2016-17 season she will return to Madison, Wisconsin’s Opera for the Young for another season of touring, this time as Adina in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, followed by a world premiere performance of The Gleam by Dale Trumbore with CHAI Collaborative Ensemble of Chicago this coming spring.

In previous seasons Ms. Hollis played Beauty in Opera for the Young’s Beauty and the Beast (2014-15), Guilette in Chicago Folks Operetta’s The Ball at the Savoy (2014-15), Sister Lillianne in Madison Opera’s Dead Man Walking (2013-14), Lauretta in Ashlawn Opera’s Gianni Schicchi, Adele in Northwestern University’s Die Fledermaus (2012), Queen of the Night in Northwestern University’s The Magic Flute (2011) and covered the role of Marie in Madison Opera’s La Fille du Régiment where she was a young artist for the 2013-14 season.

Notable awards for Ms. Hollis include First Place in the Classical Singer Magazine National Competition and the Virginia Maier Cooper Award through the Musician’s Club of Women, Chicago. She is a two-time finalist in Union League Civic and Arts Foundation’s Annual vocal competition, a Chicago NATS first place winner, and a winner of the Northwestern University Annual Concerto Competition. Ms. Hollis holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Operatic Literature from Northwestern University, a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and currently studies with Sunny Joy Langton.
